Man kills self to protest UNP leadership change
Colombo, Jul 27: A man died after setting himself on fire to protest moves to remove the leader of United National Party (UNP), Ranil Wickremesinghe, from his position.
Reinzie Algama, set himself on fire near the headquarters of Sri Lanka's main opposition party on Monday, Jul 26. Later he died of injuries on Tuesday, Jul 27.
"Algama poured a bottle of petrol over himself in front of the office in Pitakotte, and ignited it. We are very sad about the incident as he loved the party very much and was against any division in the party," said Tissa Attanayake, UNP general secretary.
Some younger members of the UNP have been demanding a change in the leadership.
