Women held for trying to smuggle corpse

London, Apr 7: Two women were held at a British airport for allegedly trying to smuggle the corpse of relative onto a flight bound for Germany, police said on Tuesday, Apr 6.

Police said that the women tried to smuggle their 91-year-old dead relative, who they said might have been driven about 35 miles (60 km) to the airport by taxi from Oldham, Greater Manchester.

The check-in staff prevented the deceased man, who was wearing sunglasses, from boarding the plane after they became suspicious. He was pushed in wheelchair through Liverpool's John Lennon airport by the two culprits.

The women were apprehended on suspicion of failing to give notification of a death. They were later released on bail.

"At 11 a.m. on Saturday 3 April 2010, police at Liverpool John Lennon airport were alerted to the death of a 91-year-old man in the terminal building," police said in a statement.

"Two women aged 41 and 66 were arrested on suspicion of failing to give notification of death."

The cause of death is yet to be identified.
