US threatened to stop providing aid to resolve Pak's political crisis
Washington, Mar.18 (ANI): The political crisis in Pakistan had the international community worried, and the United States particularly was alarmed over the turmoil as it tried to resolve the issue by threatening to stop the aid it has been providing for long.
The United States not only warned about a check on the assistance being provided, but it also has serious concerns about the Zardari government's ability to fight terrorism.
According to Dawn, top US officials have expressed concern over the continous political instability in Pakistan.
Senator Patrick J. Leahy, who heads the Senate Appropriations subcommittee that funds US foreign aid programmes, has warned that if the political turmoil in Pakistan continues then the aid provided by the US can not be utilized properly.
"If Pakistan is in such a state of internal political turmoil that US aid can't be used effectively, that's going to limit what can be done," Leahy said.
The United States special envoy to Pakistan and Afghanistan, Richard Holbrooke has also said that while the resolution of the judicial dispute prevented a political meltdown in Pakistan, but the underlying problem still exists.
While Washington raised questions over the Zardari administration's efforts towards curbing terrorism in the region, the Pakistan's ambassador to US, Husain Haqqani snubbed US for interfering in Pak's internal matter.
"As an ally of Pakistan, the United States may have concerns about domestic developments but it has no role in our domestic politics," Haqqani said.
"Pakistan's domestic politics are a matter for Pakistanis alone. US support and aid should be for the Pakistani people and should remain unaffected by developments in domestic politics," he added. (ANI)
