Estimated loss of crops Rs 685 cr: Stalin
Thanjavur, Nov 29 (UNI) Tamil Nadu Local Administration Minister M K Stalin today said the estimated loss of crops and properties due to the recent heavy rain were Rs 685 crore and Rs 368 crore, respectively.
Mr Stalin, who undertook a whirlwind tour to the rain-hit areas in Tiruvarur and Nagapattinam districts, told newspersons here preliminary estimates of crop loss in Tiruvarur was Rs 456 crore, while damage to roads was to the tune of Rs 54 crore.
He said though Nagapattinam received just 337 mm of rain in the month of November last year, this time it was 855 mm.
The unprecedented rainfall had claimed 11 human lives and 178 livestock, apart from causing extensive damage to crops and roads, he added.
Mr Stalin said 1.34 lakh hectares of Samba and Thaladi crops were submerged in Tiruvarur district and over 3.63 lakh persons, who were evacuated from low-lying areas, had now been sheltered in 717 feeding centres across the district.
