Army Major from Kerala dies in Mumbai encounter

Kozhikode, Nov 28 (UNI) Army Major Sandeep Unnikrishnan, on deputation to the elite National Security Guards (NSG), today died in an encounter with terrorists in Mumbai, his family sources here said.

A communication to this affect was received from the Defence authorities in Mumbai by his father Unnikrishnan in Bangalore, his cousins Pradeep and Babu told UNI.

Major Sandeep, who was posted at NSG HQ in Manesar in Haryana, had arrived in Mumbai early this morning along with others to take on the terrorists holed up in different hotels in the metropolis since yesterday, they said.

According to information received by Mr Unnikrishnan, the officer laid down his life while encountering the anti-national elements at Nariman Point.

An alumnus of the National Defence Academy (NDA), Pune, Major Sandeep was commissioned into the Bihar regiment in 1999 and posted to the NSG three years ago.

Hailing from Cheruvannur in the district, the Unnikrishnans are settled in Bangalore.
