Nation pays homage to Indira on 91st birth anniversary
New Delhi, Nov 19 (UNI) Vice President Hamid Ansari, Prime Minister Manmohan Singh and Union Home Minister Shivraj Patil today paid homage to former Prime Minister Indira Gandhi on her 91st birth anniversary at her memorial Shakti Sthal here.
Her grandson and Congress general secretary Rahul Gandhi was also present.
Later, Lok Sabha Speaker Somnath Chatterjee, Congress president Sonia Gandhi, the Prime Minister and Mr Patil paid floral tributes near the departed leader's portrait in the Central Hall of Parliament.
Mrs Gandhi was the Prime Minister for three consecutive terms from 1966 to 1977 and for a fourth term from 1980 until her assassination in 1984. She was India's first and to date only woman Prime Minister.
Known as the Iron Lady of India, she is especially remembered for her contribution to foreign policy matters, especially her role in the Non-Aligned Movement (NAM).
She was assassinated by her bodyguards on October 31, 1984.
