Children's Day celebrated with fervour across the country
New Delhi/Mumbai, Nov 14 : India celebrated Children's Day to mark the birth anniversary of country's first Prime Minister, Jawaharlal Nehru on Friday.
Nehru was very fond of children and they affectionately called him "Chacha" Nehru.
Functions are organised across the country to mark the day.
President Pratibha Devisingh Patil greeted children from across the country that had gathered at Rashtrapati Bhavan to celebrate the occasion.
The kids seemed to enjoy this occasion to the hilt and were seen presenting paintings and bouquets to the President.
President Patil interacted enthusiastically with the kids.
"We celebrate Children's Day in the memory of our country's first Prime Minister, Jawaharlal Nehru for whom everyone from children to adults have feelings of affection, faith and respect," said President Patil.
At the same time Bollywood star Salman Khan, was seen interacting and signing autographs at a function, which was organised to mark the day.
Children were ecstatic after they got the glimpse of their favorite star besides enjoying the magic show, which was organised during the occasion.
Born in 1889, Nehru joined the freedom struggle at a very early age. A close associate of Mahatma Gandhi, he was imprisoned several times for political activities.
An ardent democrat and an internationalist, Nehru, along with President Nassar of Egypt and President Tito of undivided Yugoslavia, founded the Non-Aligned Movement (NAM).
Nehru was Independent India's first prime minister from 1947 until his death in 1964.
