Future course of action on Mullaperiyar depends on SC verdict
Thiruvananthapuram, Nov 12 (UNI) Kerala Chief Minister V S Achuthanandan today said his government's future course of action on Mullaperiyar dam issue would be based on the Supreme Court verdict and the approach of the Centre.
Replying to questions at a post-Cabinet briefing, he said the state government counsel had informed the apex court about the necessity for building a new dam at Mullaperiyar, considering the dangerous condition of the 100-year-old existing dam.
The Supreme Court which fixed the water level at 145 feet had now realised the importance of a new dam because of the dangerous condition of the existing dam that threatened the life of about three million people in four districts of Kerala.
Mr Achuthanandan said his government would convince the Centre the need for a new dam at Mullaperiyar and seek all assistance to build it.
He described as ''incorrect and misleading'' reports that he had not responded to a letter from the Tamil Nadu government on the issue.
