Woman allegedly commits suicide inside sanctum sanctorum
Kendrapada, Oct 15 (UNI) A newly married woman allegedly committed suicide by pouring kerosene and later setting herself on fire inside the sanctum sanctorum of the Basudev temple at Khadalasahi village in the district.
The woman took the extreme step to end her life as her parents refused to accept that she had married a khandayat boy against the wishes of her parents.
The deceased, Surekha Panda, a year back married one Pramod Jena(21), a resident of Khadalasahi, at the Baladevjew temple of Kendrapara after she fell in love with him notwithstanding strong resistance from her parents.
The parents of Surekha not only disowned her after marriage but snapped all relationship with her.
On the auspicious day of Dusserah, Surekha urged her mother to accept the marriage but the mother refused.
Unable to digest the mental agony, she allegedly committed suicide inside the sanctum sanctorum.
Police later recovered a suicidal note in which the deceased had stated that her in-laws were not responsible for her death, Pattamundai police station officer-in-charge K C Mallick said.
However, the father of the deceased today lodged an FIR against the in-laws of Surekha, alleging that her daughter was tortured by her in-laws for dowry and forced to commit suicide.
Police seized the body and sent it for autopsy to District Headquarter hospital.
