Higher Pay For College Teachers - Retire At 65: Panel

New Delhi, Oct 3 (UNI) Higher salaries for college and university teachers, retirement at 65, defreezing recruitment, renaming Lecturers as Assistant Professors are some of the recommendations by the sixth Pay Review Committee announced tonight.

The Committee recommended raising Professor's pay scales from Rs16,400 onwards to Rs37,400 onwards and creating five new posts, including Professor of Eminence, with a fixed pay of Rs80,000, the same as the new pay for Vice Chancellors, hitherto drawing a fixed Rs25,000.

It recommended fixing the age of superannuation of all college and university teachers throughout India at 65 years, with re-employment selectively on contract basis up to the age of 70 years.

It also recommended encouraging teachers to accept consultancy and projects, register patents and research and development products and technology transfers, without having to share proceeds up to 30 per cent of their gross salary.

Two of the five new posts are recommended for universities-- Senior Professor and Professor of Eminence-- and three for colleges-- Senior Associate Professor, Professor in Postgraduate Colleges and Senior College Librarian (Selection Grade) or Senior College Director of Physical Education (Selection Grade). The title of Professor of Eminence may be conferred on not more than 10 per cent of the total strength of professors in a university.

The recommendations cover ''revision of pay and allowances, service and working conditions of teachers, Librarians, Directors of Physical Education and other Academic Staff in colleges and universities recognised by the University Grants Commission.''
