Son-in-law of Congress MLA arrested in extortion case

Mumbai, Sep 19 (UNI) Athar Supariwalla, son-in-law of Maharashtra Congress MLA Yusuf Abrahani, found himself on the wrong side of the law when he was nabbed by police on charges of kidnapping and extortion.

According to the complaint lodged with the police, two students -- Osama Rais (17) and Zuber Matin Khan (18) -- were sitting outside their residence at Nagpada in South Mumbai, when the accused first reportedly lured Osama in his car and then called Zuber at Agripada, where he had taken the former. Athar then beat up both the boys with a baseball bat and seized their expensive mobile phones.

The complaint further stated that the accused then allegedly threatened the boys to join him in the drugs dealing racket.

The victims were then forced to enter a building, where alert passers-by noticed what was happening and challenged the accused who, after seeing that he was outnumbered, fled from the spot. The victims managed to escape, thanks to public intervention.

The victims then rushed to the Nagpada police station along with their parents and lodged a complaint against the accused.

The police acted swiftly and managed to arrest the accused and also seized the vehicle used for the crime.

Senior Police Inspector Jaywant Shelar told UNI that the accused was later produced in a local court, which remanded him to police custody till September 25.
