NRI convicted by US court arrested in Vadodara
Vadodara, Sep 13 (UNI) A US-based NRI, convicted by a New Jerssy court in an immigration racket, was arrested by the city Crime Branch police following a raid on his Akota resident here.
Forty-nine-year-old fugitive, Niranjan Patel, was reportedly sentenced to three years imprisonment by the US court in November last year after he was found guilty of fraud in 135 immigration cases mostly involving the NRIs settled in the US.
Interpol had to issue a Red Corner notice against Patel on the request of the US investigating agency Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) after it was found that the convict had fled to India.
According to police commissioner Rakesh Ashthana, sleuths of the city Detection of Crime Branch (DCB), who were keeping a watch on his residence since receipt of the Interpol warrant, nabbed Patel in a raid last evening.
Later, Patel was produced before a judicial magistrate, who remanded him to Vadodara jail custody.
The convict will be extradited to the US after completion of required legal procedures, the police chief said.
Police sources said Patel, who was settled in New Jersy for long, was booked for his involvement in the immigration racket and cheating his clients.
