Census on transgenders in Tamil Nadu, govt to address plight

Tiruchirapalli, Sep 12 (UNI) The census on transgenders taken up by Tamil Nadu Government will help the state to evolve appropriate plans to improve their social and economic status, according to Chairperson of the state Social Welfare Board A. Rokkiah Malik.

Speaking at a function to mark the enumeration of transgenders in the district here, Mrs Malik emphasised the need for integrating transgenders in the social mainstream by providing them educational and job opportunities to them. Grievances like disrespect shown to them by the society and harassment in various forms were the social issues that need to be addressed.

It was towards this end that the State Government has set up a welfare Board for transgenders and started the enumeration process, she added.
