Meghalaya to be 'education hub' in the Northeast: Minister

Shillong, Sep 6 (UNI) Meghalaya Higher and Technical Education minister Manas Chaudhry said the government was committed to convert the state into an education hub in the entire Northeast.

He urged the teaching community to come forward with their dedication to achieve the goal.

Referring to Meghalaya's low literacy rate only next to Bihar and Arunachal pradesh, Mr Chaudhury said several steps had been taken to improve it from the present 62 per cent to 72 per cent in the next five years.

''One model school under each block and four polytechnics would be set up in the state to uplift the education system,'' he added.

The MPA government would improve basic amenities in the schools, specially in rural areas, the minister stated.
