Calcutta HC lawyers agitate against court authority
Kolkata, Sep 01 (UNI) The lawyers of Calcutta High Court today went on a strike to protest the authorities' failure to publish the list of cases due to be heard this month, stalling proceedings today.
The high court publishes the list of cases to be heard during a given month on the first day.
A spokesman of Calcutta High Court Bar Association Uttam Majumdar said the authorities had failed to publish the list for the first time in the court's history.
Mr Majumdar added that more than five thousand lawyers attached with the court abstained from attending, though judges were present.
''We regret that the litigants were inconvenienced for the strike.
But we have no alternative than protesting the indifference of the court authority,'' he stated.
More than three lakh cases were pending in the court and a dozen of posts of judges were lying vacant, despite the growing number of backlogs, he further informed.
