15,000 villagers to be benefitted by PMGSY in Arunachal
Itanagar, Aug 28 (UNI) Above 15 thousand people of 18 villages in Changlang district of Arunachal Pradesh will be benefitted under the World Bank funded Pradhan Mantri Gram Sadak Yojana (PMGSY) scheme.
Official sources said here today that six road projects under the Bordumsa-Diyun block of the district, altogether comprising a length of 32.50 km, had been okayed by the Centre for the year 2008-09.
The process of tendering would be initiated by the end of September, sources informed.
The PMGSY is an initiative undertaken by the Ministry of Rural Development as a strategy to alleviate poverty.
The programme, aimed at specifically connecting rural habitation with all-weather road, was launched in December 2000.
While rural habitations with a population of over 1,000 would be eligible under the first phase of the project, such habitations with a number of occupants between 500 and 1,000 would be qualified in the second phase.
Hills, deserts and tribal areas with a population of over 250 would also be connected, sources said adding no further work would be undertaken under the PMGSY scheme once a habitation was connected.
The PMGSY is aimed at increasing farm activity, apart from raising the income of the people by improving economic and social services in rural areas.
