Meghalaya CM advocates provincialisation of education in NE

Shillong, Aug 22 (UNI) Meghalaya Chief Minister Donkupar Roy has advocated the idea of provincialisation of various educational institutions in the state.

Inaugurating the third North-East education ministers conference here yesterday, Mr Roy said his government was interested to provincialise educational institutions following the Assam formula.

'' We would like to have the considered views and opinions of the other states of the region for taking up projects in public-private partnership especially in the higher education '' the chief minister said.

Education ministers from Sikkim, Arunachal Pradesh and Mizoram attended the meeting.

'' In Assam, the government has taken over and converted colleges into government institutions. We would like to have the benefit of their experiences '' the chief minister added.

He said the quality of teaching subjects like Mathematics, Science and English needed to be improved to reduce high school dropout rates in the region.

Echoing Mr Roy's advocacy, Mizoram education minister R Lalthangliana said that the government in the North Eastern states still need to further improve the quality of education.

Mooting the idea of having a North East Parliament like the European Union, to address their common problems, Meghalaya education minister, Manas Chaudhuri stressed on the need of a proper roadmap for education in the region.
