ATSUM calls for general strike in Manipur

Imphal, Aug 9 (UNI) The All Tribal Students' Union, Manipur (ATSUM) has called a 48-hour general strike across the state with effect from August 11 midnight.

ATSUM General Secretary Taishya said an indefinite blockade would also be imposed along two national highways -- NH 39 and NH 53 in the state with effect from the midnight of August 13.

The students' body is demanding that a reservation for tribals should be increased to 34 per cent from seven per cent in Manipur University, the service of school teachers appointed on contract basis in the hills be extended and the order cancelling grant-in-aid of aided schools be revoked.
