Agitation against Bangladeshi hits the road
Guwahati, Aug 6 (UNI) Launching a fresh agitation against Bangladeshis, the AASU today gheraoed the Regional Passport office, halting traffic in the city.
Nearly 3000 All Assam Students Union activists descended from lower Assam on the passport office and laid a peaceful seige, shocking the state administration.
The AASU demanded to know how Bangladeshis were given passport ''so easily'' by the authorities.
Hundreds had to return from the passport office as the AASU, led by adviser Samujjal Kr Bhattacharya, president Sankar Prasad Ray and general secretary Tapan Kumar Dutta gheraoed it.
Later speaking to newspersons, the AASU leadership said they would directly 'take on' the Bangladeshi issue as the state government was 'not sincere' about resolving the problem.
''Neither were the relevant clauses of the Assam Accord implemented nor was the National Registrar of Citizens prepared,'' said Dr Bhattacharya.
