Govt to improve communication facilities in rural areas: Ahmad
Darbhanga, Aug 4 (UNI) Union Minister of State for Home Shakeel Ahmad today reiterated that the government was committed to providing modern communication facilities in rural areas.
Inaugurating a fully computerised sub-post office at Singheswara village in Darbhanga district, Mr Ahmad said the government was taking several steps to provide modern facilities of communication to masses in rural areas.
Referring to the vast network of the postal department in the country, he said out of seven lakh post offices across the globe, 1.55 lakh post offices were functioning in India alone.
''Gone are the days when the service of the post offices was limited to delivery of letters and money orders as they have now become information centres,'' Mr Ahmad said, adding that despite the private players operating in this sector, utility and credibility of the postal department still remained intact.
Lauding the efforts of the postal department in social sector, he said post offices were playing pivotal role in executing various welfare schemes like National Rural Employment Guarantee (NREGA) scheme and Old Age Pension Scheme.
Accounts for the beneficiaries of these welfare schemes are being opened in post offices, he added.
