Hum of lawnmower is Brits' 'fav sound of summer'

London, July 26 : The humble sound of a lawnmower is Britons' favourite summer sound, says a new poll.

The seasonal noise beat the sound of pub garden chatter into second place.

Waves breaking on to a beach came third in the survey of 2,500 Britons.

The sound of sports such as people playing cricket and tennis came fourth and fifth on the list.

Animal sounds were also prominent with seagulls cawing continuing the summer beach association, while pigeons cooing also made the list.

Surprisingly only one in ten associated the sound of rain with summer.

"These associations are powerful when linked with other senses or positive experiences," the Sun quoted Psychologist Prof Richard Wiseman, from the University of Hertfordshire, as saying.

The Top Ten Summer Sounds are:

1 Lawnmower cutting grass

2 Pub garden chatter

3 Waves on a beach

4 A cricket ball hitting a bat

5 People playing tennis

6 Drinks poured over ice

7 Seagulls cawing

8 Pigeons cooing

9 Clinking glass

10 Rain
