Notorious gangster killed in encounter

Mumbai, Jul 24: A gangster associated with Hemant Poojari gang was killed in an encounter by police at Andheri in western suburbs here on Thursday, July 24.

Police Crime Branch Unit-IX had received information that Anand alias Tarzen, a close associate of Hemant Poojari gang would be coming to Lokhandwala complex on Wednesday, July 23 night to kidnap a businessman for extortion. Crime Branch sleuth laid a trap and at around 2230 hrs whenAnand arrived there police in civil dress identified and asked him to surrender before the police. Instead of surrendering himself, Anand fired couple of rounds towards the police team. In retaliation his head and chest were injured following which, he collapsed.

He was rushed to Cooper Hospital where he was declared dead before admission. Eight cases of firing, extortion, attempt to murder and murder were registered against him in the jurisdiction of city police commissionariat, the police added.
