Guwahati, Jul 23 (UNI) A scientific approach, based on previous records, and a proper drainage system were the keys to solve the problem of urban floods, National Disaster Management Authority member N Shashidhar Reddy said here today.
Talking to newsmen after chairing a meeting here on urban flood management, Mr Reddy said a prolonged strategy was being worked out to tackle the urban floods, especially in the capital city of Guwahati.
He informed that the warning system was being enhanced and a comprehensive study to forecast water logging problems was being carried out, based on comparative analysis of previous years' informations.
Mr Reddy emphasised on the necessity of a proper and unclogged drainage system for stopping urban floods.
He added that the states had been asked to prepare an urban flood management plan way back in 1975 but only a couple of them did it.
The other states are completing their plans only now.
