Quake of 5.1 magnitude hits Carlsberg Ridge
New Delhi, Jul 20 (UNI) An earthquake measuring 5.1 on the richter scale was recorded in the Carlsberg Ridge in the north of Central Indian Ridge (CIR).
Describing it as moderate, the met department said the quake was recorded at 13.52 hrs on 5.1 degrees North and 62.1 degrees East.
The Carlsberg Ridge is seismically active, with a major earthquake recorded by the US Geological Survey at 7.6 on the Richter scale on July 15, 2003.
The latest recorded earthquake occurred on September 15, 2007.
The CIR is a divergent tectonic plate boundary between the African Plate and the Indo-Australian Plate, traversing the western regions of the Indian Ocean. The northern section of the CIR is also called the Carlsberg Ridge.
