Lalu meets Sonia to discuss political situation
New Delhi, Jul 1 (UNI) In view of the political uncertainity looming large on the UPA government over the Indo-US nuclear deal, Rashtriya Janata Dal President and Railway Minister Lalu Prasad today met UPA Chairperson Sonia Gandhi to discuss the situation.
The meeting is significant in view of the Left Parties asserting that they would withdraw the support once the Government would go to the IAEA on the nuclear deal. They have indicated that a decision in this regard would be taken before Prime Minister Manmohan Singh's visit to Japan for G-8 meeting.
Mr Prasad, who enjoys good rapport with the Left leaders, has supported the UPA government on the nuclear deal issue. However, he holds the view and conveyed to the Congress President that time was not ripe for going to polls.
Indications are already there that the Samajwadi Party would support the UPA government in Parliament. The SP has taken a turnaround on the nuke deal issue thereby giving a big blow to UNPA.
