Geelani under house arrest, holds meeting in Srinagar

Srinagar, Jun 24 (UNI) Chairman of the breakaway Hurriyat Conference (HC) Syed Ali Shah Geelani was put under house arrest since early this morning.

Mr Geelani presided over an emergency meeting of the Majlis Shoura, highest decision making body of the HC, at his residence in which it was decided to hold demonstrations against transfer of forest land to Shri Amarnath Shrine Board (SASB) and police action against peaceful processionists on Friday.

A spokesperson of the HC Aiyaz Akbar told UNI that the meeting was called to dicuss the latest situation, including land transfer and death of a youth and injuries to scores of others in police firing and teargassing.

He said the members presented their views on the situation and it was decided that Mr Geelani will lead a peaceful procession from Khankha-e-Moula to registered their protest against land transfer and police action.

Mr Akbar said Mr Geelani was put under house arrest since 0200 hours.

Mr Geelahi gave a slip to the police and led a massive procession from old city yesterday when leaders of both the faction of HC were put under house arrest.

He said a large number of police personnel has been deployed outside his Hyderpora residence and he was informed that he cannot leave his house till further orders.

However, there was no restriction on those who were coming to meet him, he said.
