47-day ban on mechanised fishing vessels in Goa
Panaji, Jun 15 (UNI) The 47-day ban on fishing by all mechanised vessels in the territorial waters of Goa has come into force with effect from today.
The ban has been imposed till July 31 in a bid to help rejuvenate marine fish resources in the breeding season.
The Goa government had issued the order following the interim orders of Supreme Court in a writ petition of 2005.
Meanwhile, the Centre had also imposed the ban on the operation of all deep sea fishing vessels in the Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ) on the West Coast during the same period.
The motorised canoes fitted with the outboard or inboard motors upto 10 HP are exempt from the ban. They are however, cautioned not to venture in the sea during the rough weather conditions.
The violators should be dealt strictly as per the provisions of law, according to official sources.
