New facilities in RSP to produce higher quality steel

Bhubaneswar,Jun 05 (UNI) A new Hot Desulphurization Unit to bring down the level of sulphur in Hot Metal to 0.01 per cent through the process of desulphurization was inaugurated in the Rourkela Steel Plant(RSP)today.

The new facilities, sources said, would reduce presence of sulphur in the hot metal which adversely affected mechanical properties of Steel, both in cast conditions and in rolled conditions.

A newly converted Gas Holder at Coke Ovens was also inaugurated by RSP Managing Director B N Singh.

The present trends in steel industry indicated final sulphur level concentrations of 0.01 per cent for most applications. In order to meet the stringent sulphur requirement in Steel,it needs to be tackled at hot metal stage by desulphurising it before feeding for steel making.

RSP sources said the new facility would contribute significantly in enhancing the steel plant's capability to produce higher quality steel.

The project was completed ahead of schedule at a cost of Rs.

52.39 crores. The Coke Oven Gas holder which was not in use since 1992 after a major break down was revived and converted from Klonne Type to Dry Seal Type.

The entire job, sources said, was completed at a cost of Rs 19.81 crores. The newly converted Gas Holder would lead to more effective storage of coke oven gas and help in energy conservation.
