Liver transplant surgery performed in Gujarat hospital
Ahmedabad, May 30 (UNI) The Institute of Kidney Diseases and Research Centre here has successfully performed a liver transplantation surgery, which is claimed to be the first of its kind to be performed by any public sector hospital in the country.
The liver transplantation was performed on May 28 by a team of doctors led by Dr Veena Shah, Institute director H L Trivedi told reporters here today. The surgery took 15.5 hours.
Dr Trivedi informed that the family of a 60-year-old man donated his liver after he died in an accident.
The man had been hit by a motorcycle on May 13 and sustained severe head injuries. He was declared brain dead.
The recipient is a 52-year-old housewife from Gandhinagar who had developed end-stage liver failure due to blood transfusion-induced Hepatitis 'C', Dr Trivedi informed.
