India condoles loss of life in Chinese quake, offers support

New Delhi, May 14 (UNI) India today condoled the death of people in the recent earthquake in China and expressed readiness to provide any assistance for rehabilitation and relief of the victims.

External Affairs Minister Pranab Mukherjee wrote to his Chinese counterpart Yang Jiechi and expressed deep shock at the devastating earthquake that hit the Sichuan province on May 12 killing thousands of people and causing widespread destruction.

The External Affairs Minister conveyed his condolences at the tragedy and indicated India's readiness to provide any assistance that China may require, an External Affairs Ministry spokesman said here today.

India is already actively involved in relief and rehabilitation efforts in Myanmar which was struck by a devastating cyclone on May 2-3 killing thousands of people.
