Elaborate security at Singur on eve of Panchayat poll

Singur, May 13 (UNI) A massive security blanket was thrown over the volatile Singur in Hooghly district in view of the second phase of the three-tier Panchayat election tomorrow.

Official sources here said Central security forces, comprising the BSF and IRB jawans, besides personnel from Kerala Police and state Armed Police, had been deployed to ensure a smooth and peaceful poll.

All the 236 booths - 176 main and 60 auxilliary - had been declared highly sensitive, sources added.

Sources said the Central forces would patrol the sensitive areas, where tension ran high during the farmers's agitation in protest against the acquisition of land for setting up Tata's small car plant.

Meanwhile, the peasants here were ecstatic after the Supreme Court's decision to examine the validity of the acquisition of land at Singur by the state government for the Tata Nano Car plant.
