Inferno engulfs Lakhimpur Kheri

Lakhimpur Kheri, Apr 20 (UNI) Property worth several lakhs here today reduced to ashes in a blazing inferno, which has till now engulfed 10 villages of Mohamadi tehsil and was yet to be extinguished.

No casualty was, however, reported in the incident, sources said.

Fire fighters of Hardoi, Sitapur and this district were pressed into service to get hold of the ablaze.

The fire first broke into Chandnapur and Mogiyapur villages and slowly due to the speedy winds engulfed the nearby villages, including Magdapur, Rasulpur, Kalluapur and Pipri Ajeej.

According to the locals, wood was being melted to prepare 'tarcoal' for road construction in the village, which led to the fire.

The blaze also destroyed standing crops in about 10,000 acre land, sources added.

Efforts to douse the fire were still underway.
