Tension in Etah after Dalit youth beaten UP

Etah, Mar 28 (UNI) The Dalit community in the district is in a furore, following yesterday's incident where a dalit youth was tied to a tree and mercilessly beaten at Patiala town.

The victim was identified as Bhumi Raj of village Nunhara, police said today.

The village panchayat had ordered his beating as a punishment for distributing 'prasad' to the locals yesterday.

Local residents caught the youth and assaulted him.

Later, the mob pelted stones on the police, who had reached to intervene, forcing them to fire in the air to quell them.

Till now, police has arrested one person in connection with the crime, while a search for 22 other accused was on.

Meanwhile, PAC and police in strength has been deployed to forestall fresh violence.

The victim is recovering in hospital.
