Asma Jahangir calls on NHRC chairperson

New Delhi, Mar 19 (UNI) UN Special Rapporteur on Freedom of Religion and Belief Asma Jahangir today called on NHRC chairman S Rajendra Babu and discussed several issues, including instances of communal violence in different parts of India and religious conversion.

The more than hour-long meeting also discussed rehabilitation of riot affected in Gujarat, an NHRC spokesperson said.

She held discussions with NHRC Members and Senior Officials of the Commission. The discussions centered on religious issues in India which have a bearing on Human Rights.

Ms Jahangir was briefed about the Commission's working and also about the co-ordination between the NHRC and the SHRCs.

During her mission to India, from March 3 to 20 at the invitation of the Indian Government Ms Jahangir travelled to Amritsar, Delhi, Jammu, Srinagar, Ahmedabad, Mumbai, Thiruvananthapuram, Bhubaneshwar and Lucknow.

Throughout her mission, the Special Rapporteur held talks with a number of people related to her mandate. They included government officials, policy makers and academics as well as members and leaders of religious communities and civil society organizations.
