SC dismisses Jana Shakti's petition on Mullaperiyar Dam
New Delhi, Mar 11 (UNI) The Supreme Court today dismissed a writ petition filed by Jana Shakti for the commissioning of Mullaperiyar dam which is a bone of contention between the state of Tamil Nadu and Kerala.
A bench comprising Justices Arijit Pasayat, C K Thakker and D K Jain, however, granted time to the two states to file additional affidavit and documents.
The apex court adjourned the hearing till the third week of July.
The petitioneer had contended that the dam has already outlived its expected life and is badly damaged at several places and if it gives way then there will be widespread devastation and destruction in Kerala.
According to the Jana Shakti, five districts in Kerala would be totally wiped out and around 35 lakh lives will be lost.
The apex court, however, told the petitioneer that he has no locus stand and his apprehension will be taken care of while deciding the suit filed by Tamil Nadu.
Kerala has been sparing no effort in getting the dam demolished, while Tamil Nadu has been fighting for reserving the dam.
