Lot to be done for riot-torn people: UN special Rapporteur
Ahmedabad, Mar 9 (UNI) Asma Jehangir, a United Nations special Rapporteur on Freedom of Religion, today said a lot need to be done for the riot-affected people of Godhra and to improve overall situation of human rights in Gujarat.
Talking to mediapersons here, Ms Jehangir said ''We need to know the reasons behind post-Godhra violence. What made it happen? Were there early signs of it and if so, why no attention was paid to it? On the detainment of Indian fishermen by Pakistani authorities, the Pakistani Human Rights lawyer said both countries should come forward with a solid mechanism to put an end to the detainment of innocent fishermen and their travails.
Earlier in the day, Ms Jehangir met several government officials, NGO and human rights activists. She also met some post-Godhra violence affected people and tried to find out their current status.
