More than thousand people fall ill after a feast during Challisa
Barasat, Mar 5 (UNI) More than a thousand people of different villages under Baduria Block in North 24 Parganas fell ill after allegedly consuming food distributed during Challisa in connection with Muharram, organised at a mosque in Keotsa village in Chandipur Panchayet.
Official sources said here today that most of the patients complained of an upset stomach after consuming the food last night.
A good number of the patients were rushed to different health centres and hospitals at Basirhat, Habra and the district hospital.
The district authorities also sent two medical teams while four camps were installed in some villages.
Chief Medical Officer (Health), North 24 Parganas, Dr Kusum Kumar Adhikary said there was no report of any death so far and described the situation under control.
Meanwhile, local MLA Md Salim visited the affected areas while the chief of the Ramchandrapur Panchayet Ul Fatennesa claimed that a few thousand people of 28 villages were affected.
A number of camps were also set up by the Panchayat with the help of local medical practitioners.
Medical officers attending the patients suspected food poisoning to be the cause of the illness.
