Petrol price hike stir: 500 Left party cadres arrested
Chennai, Feb 15 (UNI) More than 500 workers of the CPI and CPI(M) were today arrested when they staged rail and road blockade agitations across Tamil Nadu, condemning the hike in the prices of petrol and diesel.
All the arrested were later released, reports received here said.
About 75 workers were arrested when they blocked trains at Tiruvarur railway station, demanding immediate rollback of the hike as it would burden the common man.
The workers also hit the streets, blocking roads in several parts of the State. They also staged demonstrations, condemning the Centre for hiking the prices of petrol and diesel.
A Tiruchirapalli report said 50 auto rickshaw drivers, belonging to the CITU, were taken into custody when they attempted to resort to a rail roko agitation at the Tiruchirapalli railway junction.
