Govt asked to furnish list of vacancies in depts
Chennai, Feb 13 (UNI) Madras High Court today directed the Tamil Nadu Government to provide the total list of vacancies in various departments, while restraining it from retrenching any of the 12,000 contract employees appointed during the 2003 AIADMK regime when the government staff went on strike en masse.
Judge Ms Prabha Sridevan gave the above direction on a petition filed by the Tamil Nadu Government Temporary Junior Assistants and Assistants Welfare Association, seeking regularisation of the 12,000 employees.
The government informed the Court that there were only 4,103 vacancies, which would be filled up by conducting competitive examinations on February 17 and the balance of 7,897 staff would be regularised in phases.
The government also submitted that the candidates appearing for the examinations, would have to secure a minimum of 30 marks for recruitment.
Defence counsel Ms Nalini Chidambaram, quoting official records, said there were 70,000 vacancies in various departments and wanted the government to accommodate all the 12,000 contract employees in this.
After accepting these submissions, the Judge directed the government to furnish the exact list of vacancies in various departments after the examinations and adjourned the case for further hearing.
