Mumbai, Feb 5 (UNI) The Mumbai police today detained Maharashtra Navnirman Sena (MNS) leader Shishir Shinde and Congress spokesman Sanjay Nirupam as a precautionary measure to prevent any flare-up of violence in the city.

MNS spokesman Shishir Shinde was picked up from his residence in Bhandup here and was taken to the Bhoiwada police station.

According to sources, police will also probe his involvement in the attack on Samajwadi Party activists last Sunday.

Mr Nirupam was detained in Dadar along with his supporters while he was on his way to stage a ''dharna-cum-peace rally'' outside the residence of MNS chief Raj Thackeray.

Police have tightened security in the Shivaji Park area and issued prohibitary orders, banning the Assembly of four or more people.

While talking to UNI, Additional Commissioner of Police Rajneesh Seth said the city police have begun combing operations and were detaining all the people involved in violence in the last two days.
