Vadodara, Jan 15 (UNI) Police fired three rounds in the air and burst teargas shells to disperse a rampaging mob in the sensitive Panigate-Bawamanpura areas of the city, indulging in arson and heavy stone-pelting at members of a Tazia procession.
At least 15 people, including three policemen, were injured in the incident here late last night.
The trouble started when a Tazia procession was passing through Panigate area. Some people started pelting stones at the procession, leading to a a mild stampede. Later, members of two communities from neighbouring areas came out on the streets and resorted to stone throwing.
The mob also set ablaze two motorbikes and two shops in the Panigate area.
Police have registered a case of rioting against 150 persons.
Patrolling has been intensified in the trouble-torn areas.
No untoward incident has been reported since this morning. Police said the situation was tense but under control this evening.
