Vaiko for ordinance to ensure conduct of Jallikattu

Chennai, Jan 13 (UNI) Describing as ''unjust'' the Supreme Court's ban on 'Jallikattu' (taming of the bull), MDMK General Secretary Vaiko today urged the Tamil Nadu Government to promulgate an ordinance to ensure that the valour sport was conducted regularly during Pongal festivities.

In a statement here, he said the apex court's verdict has come as a rude shock to the people of the southern districts, ahead of the Pongal festival.

The State Government, which had failed to handle the issue when the apex court stayed Jallikattu last year, should take steps to expedite the case by filing a review petition and promulgating an ordinance to ensure conduct of the event, Mr Vaiko said, adding that Jallikattu was a symbol of culture and heritage of the State.

Promulgation of an ordinance would remind the Centre and the apex court of the ordinances promulgated by the Karnataka and Kerala Governments, opposing the Supreme Court's order on Cauvery and Mullaiperiyar dam issues respectively, he noted.
