TN Govt to file review petition on SC ban on 'Jallikattu'
Chennai, Jan 12 (UNI) Faced with a virtual revolt from the people of Southern Districts over the Apex Court's blanket ban on 'Jallikattu' (taming of bulls), the Tamil Nadu Government today decided to file a review petition on the order.
An official release here said a high-level team would fly to New Delhi tomorrow morning to file a review petition before the Supreme Court on January 14.
The team would comprise State Advocate General and senior lawyers, top police personnel and officials from the Madurai District where the annual 'Jallikattu' is held as part of Pongal festivities.
The government's decision to file a review petition followed resentment among the people of Madurai and other Southern Districts over the ban and the demand by political parties, including from Ruling DMK's allies, the PMK and the Viduthalai Chiruthaigal Katchi, that the government take steps to ensure conduct of the Jallikattu, which was identified with Tamil culture and valour of Tamils.
