Tension in Chembur over Buddhist monk's suicide
Mumbai, Jan 6 (UNI) Tension prevailed in Chembur area after a 77-year-old Buddhist monk allegedly committed suicide at nearby Gautam Nagar in Deonar in north-east Mumbai.
The monk, Bandan Sangray Thoro Mandir took the extreme step at his residence this morning. However, local residents claimed foul play and pointed fingers at a builder. According to sources, Builder Lakrawala had a dispute with Bandan over development rights of Panscheel Housing Society, that vested with the former.
Following the incident, Dalit activists of the area took to the streets and blocked roads in Govandi, Trombay and other areas. There were also reports of stone pelting.
Police, however, said the situation was under control this evening.
Meanwhile, Lakrawala is reported to be out of the country by his staff.
