CPI demands special category state status for Pondy

Puducherry, Jan 6 (UNI) The local unit of the Communist Party of India (CPI) today urged the Centre to confer special category state status to Puducherry.

A resolution to this effect was adopted at the 19th State conference of the party, which concluded here today.

In another resoulution, the party urged the Centre to lay a broadguage railway line between Cuddalore and Tindivanam via Puducherry, more power to Puducherry Assembly and ensuring uniform development of all the four regions of the Union Territory.

The conference also sought strengthening of the police department to prevent entry of anti-socials elements and smugglers into Puducherry, evolution of a new labour policy, free 10 kg rice scheme and celebrating November one as the Independence day of Puducherry.
