Mayawati hails Supreme Court decision
Lucknow, June 13: Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) president Mayawati today welcomed the Supreme Court decision to dismiss a petition challenging her appointment as the Chief Minister of Uttar Pradesh.
''The SC judgement rejected the efforts of vested interests to disturb a democratically elected government in UP,'' she said while talking to mediapersons.
BSP general secretary and cabinet minister attached to the Chief Minister Satish Chandra Mishra said the court has given a detailed judgement, thus removing any doubt on the legality of the government.
The petition was filed in the SC against Ms Mayawati and Mr Mishra for becoming Chief Miister and a cabinet minister respectively without resigning from the Rajya Sabha membership.
Earlier today, a vacation bench comprising Justices Arijit Pasayat and P P Naolekar of the Supreme Court, dismissed the petition, holding that in view of an earlier judgement of the court, there was no merit in the petition and it was accordingly dismissed.
An advocate, Ashok Pandey, had filed the petition challenging the appointment of Ms Mayawati as the Chief Minister and Mr Satish Chandra Mishra as a cabinet minister in UP on the ground that both were Members of the Rajya Sabha and as such their continuance in the state government without resigning their Parliament seats was unconstitutional and illegal.
Mr Pandey had also sought directions from the Apex Court to quash all the decisions taken by the Mayawati government since she took over the reins of Uttar Pradesh in May.
