'Execution to intensify hatred for US among Arab'

New Delhi, Dec 30: Denouncing the ''harried and heinous'' execution of toppled Iraqi leader Saddam Hussein without adopting the full lawful course, the Left parties today regretted that the UPA government did not raise its voice effectively to invoke the UN intervention and feared that the hanging would lead to the break-up of Iraq.

While the CPI said the Indian government should have raised its voice more effectively to seek the UN intervention, the CPI(M) maintained that the UPA government should realise that its strategic alliance with the George W Bush administration, which is notorious for its imperial aggrandisement, will harm India's interests.

''It is shameful act carried out by the imperialist occupation forces, whose leaders themselves deserve to be tried as war criminals for the mass murder of more than 6,00,000 Iraqi men, women and children,'' the CPI Central Secretariat said in a statement.

The Left party said this act would only aggravate the situation in Iraq, making it difficult to restore normalcy. ''It may even lead to the the break-up of that country, which was a cradle of ancient civilisation.'' The CPI(M) said the hanging of Saddam Hussein would be condemned by all those who believe that an imperialist occupying power had no right to violate national sovereignty and dispense justice on those whom they had illegally over thrown.

''The execution of Saddam will only increase hatred for the US among the Arab people and West Asia. US President Bush and his colleagues will have to face the consequences of this illegal and criminal act perperated by its client government in Iraq,'' the CPI(M) Polit Bureau said in a statement.

The Left party called on all its party units and democratic organisations to protest this heinous act.
