Cong laments 'undue haste' in Saddam execution

New Delhi, Dec 30: The Congress today reacted strongly to the hanging of former Iraqi ruler Saddam Hussein, saying the ''undue haste'' in his execution lacked credibility.

In a statement, Congress Working Committee member Janardhan Dwivedi said the party had expressed its concern and appealed not to execute Saddam Hussein.

Regretting that ''unfortunately'' this did not happen, he said : '' The clear procedural deficiencies in the trial process and the undue haste in execution do no carry any credibility.'' In this context, Mr Dwivedi, who is the head of the Media department, said the procedural deficiencies and the undue haste validated the Congress' previously expressed apprehension regarding ad hoc ''victor's justice''.

The Congress, which is heading the ruling coalition at the Centre, however, hoped that the ''unfortunate event'' would not stand in the way of the process of restoring normalcy and reconciliation in Iraq.
