Rahul Mahajan granted bail in Drugs abuse case

New Delhi, June 14: A special court today granted bail to late BJP leader Pramod Mahajan's son Rahul in the drugs abuse case.

Special judge (NDPS) Swarnakanta Mehra granted bail to Rahul on a personal bond of Rs two lakh and a surety of the like amount.

She asked him not to contact any witness or try to tamper with evidence in the case. He was also asked not to leave Delhi without the court's permission until a chargesheet in the case was filed.

Rahul was also directed to surrender his passport.

During arguments, the police opposed his bail plea saying he could influence the witnesses, while the defence challenged it.

Rahul's lawyers also opposed the prosecution's claim that he was engaged in trafficking of drugs while pointing out that the police was yet to specify the quantity of drugs found on him.

The judge had reserved her order yesterday. Rahul had fallen seriously ill and his father's private secretary Bibek Moitra had died after a late night drinks and drugs party at Mr Mahajan's 7, Safdarjang Road residence here on June 2.

He was arrested on June 5 on discharge from Apollo Hospital and sent to Tihar jail three days later on judicial custody till June 22.

Following the order, he was expected to be released from Tihar jail later today on completion of legal formalities.
