Court rejects plea for Pravin's psychiatric test

Mumbai, June 14: A local court today once again rejected the application of Pravin Mahajan, accused of killing his elder brother and senior BJP leader Pramod Mahajan, for undergoing a psychiatric test.

Additional Chief Metropolitan Magistrate B L Waghmare while rejecting the application for the fourth time said that it appeared that the accused was a normal person and did not require any psychiatric treatment.

The court said he had already been examined in the government run J J hospital by a panel of doctors and as per the medical report and the history of the accused, he did not require any psychiatric treatment.

The court has also turned down the defence plea to supervise the investigation under the court's control.

Mr Waghmare said the investigations conducted so far were fair and proper and there was no reasonable ground to believe that pressure tactics were adopted by the investigators.

The court held that the accused had committed a serious crime and further investigation were needed.

The court also turned down Pravin's plea to allow him to meet his brother-in-law who was present in the court room.

But it said that the accused could make an application to the jail authorities in this regard.

Pravin Mahajan described the Rahul Mahajan incident as a ''national tragedy'' while he was addressing the court.

However, the court restricted him from commenting on the issue. He also said, ''Whatever has been happening in my family since the past one and half years is shocking and disturbing to me and I am spending sleepless nights.'' On the previous occasion, his judicial custody was extended without his being physically produced in the court nor by it through video-conferencing as there was a technical fault in the instrument.
